Los Gatos scored five times in the bottom of the first Saturday and never looked back, cruising to an 8-3 victory over Monterey to claim third place in the 12-team Los Gatos-Westmont Varsity Softball Tournament.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Olivia Sickels led off the bottom half of the inning with a double off the center-field fence, taking third on a bobble by the center-fielder. Addie Sorto followed with a ground ball to short, but an excellent baserunning play by Sickels at third drew a throw there, with Sickels diving back safely.
After courtesy runner Robyn Young stole second, Grace Tucker rifled a single to right to drive in a run. Tucker then stole second, with Young scoring on the play.
Ava Norquist singled Tucker to third. Lily Young then launched a long home run over the left-field wall to make it a 5-1 game.
Danica DeSantis got the start in the circle for the Cats, tossing three innings to pick up the win. DeSantis allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking one. Ava Norquist picked up the save with two scoreless innings in a game called after five innings due to time limit.
Sickels had two hits and scored two runs. Lily Young had two hits, drove in three and scored twice. Keira Kelly picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
